First and foremost it’s important to decide what you want in your backyard garden design. What will be the function of the yard and what style do you want or is already on your property? Do you want to include an area for entertaining or a workshop? Is there to be an area for children to play, swimming pool or a water garden? Or maybe you would like to design an outdoor room.
Even if you are not a gardener, adding plants trees and shrubs will create more of a relaxing atmosphere and comfort to the backyard. They can also act and a focal point in your landscape design. With proper plant selection you will be able to add color for tall the seasons.

When first starting your landscape design, focus on the area where you spend most of your time. By creating this area first you will enjoy the yard while other work is being done at a later time.
The style of your home and your lifestyle are starting points for your landscape design. Most house styles fall in contemporary, formal, informal, formal/informal, English garden or cottage garden, oriental or woodland. Your landscape style can also be high maintenance or an easy to care for landscape.
There are times you should hire a profession landscaper and times you can do the work yourself, if you so inclined.

With any landscape design I do, I start with the smaller projects and create the area I will use the most. As the yard develops I move onto the larger projects. By keeping your landscaping designs small and moving from one project to another you can still enjoy your yard.
