First determine what plants you want to grow. Many flowers are edible and herbs also have culinary uses and add beauty to a garden. In small space gardening, a fundamental idea in urban gardening, it’s best to choose plants with multiple uses.

Herbs add color to the home but also have medicinal, crafting and culinary uses. And many flowers are edible.

Next decide on whether you will plants seeds or transplants. Seeds germinate quickly, will be a cheaper alternative in the long run and offer you a larger selection of varieties. Transplants will get your garden area going quicker and add a lush garden look to your living space instantly. And if you live in a shorter growing climate transplants will help you achieve a crop of produce quicker. But transplants are more expensive.

After selecting your crops you want to grow its time to tackle the urban gardeners biggest problem, space. Hanging planters, window boxes, container gardening and vertical gardening ideas will help with limited space issues. These topics should help with limited growing space.

Vegetables can easily be grown in the urban garden. Tomato plants grow well in hanging baskets, as do strawberries. When selecting seeds or transplants for vegetables look for the small vegetable varieties, Mini pumpkins, baby carrots, cherry tomatoes are a few ideas.

And vining plants grown up a trellis will add more vegetables, flowers and privacy to your small urban garden setting. I like to mix vegetables and vining flowers on the same trellis for color and use. For example the scarlet runner bean has a beautiful flower and an excellent taste.

Fruits such as raspberries, blueberries, vine peach, miniature melons and even potted fruit trees will also grow in containers. A small space fruit garden will add an oasis feel to your home.

One other consideration for the urban gardener is adequate light or shade. Research your plant and garden selections to determine the light they need.

Plants that need more shade may do well on a porch area or balcony. Containers gardens have the option of being moved if the plants are receiving too much light and can be moved on a porch or behind a trellis or screen.

For plants that need abundant light, like tomatoes and peppers, locations with 8 hours of light are a look choice; porches, sun rooms and window boxes will also work well.

Urban gardens that get the right amount of light, proper soil and water will produce large crops and add color and fragrance to you small space garden area. You will also get a feel of more space with the lush rich look these plants will add to your home.

Many people have limited garden space or want their garden as near to the house as possible. The perfect solution is to create a garden porch. Berkeley porch

Your produce will be within walking distance, watering will be easy and you will have the added benefit of creating a garden oasis on your porch that will be enjoyed by family and friends.

The first step to a successful porch garden is to check the sunlight that your plants will receive. For a vegetable garden you will need 6 to 8 hours or sunlight. Flowers and herbs can live with less light but really prefer sunlight.

If sunlight is a problem and you really want the garden you can add fluorescent lighting to help your plants out.

Next it’s time to select containers. A mix of hanging baskets, window boxes, and larger containers for the floor will add a layering of plants which creates a full lush feeling in your garden area. You can choose plastic wood or ceramic containers. For retaining moisture, ceramic and terra cotta are the best.

My porch garden has two upside down hanging tomato plants, two hanging strawberry plants, two window boxes that have been placed on the porch railing, and 4 floor containers for the porch corner that will add height in planting to the garden.

It’s best to keep your plant containers about 16 inches or more in diameter so that the plants will not dry out as fast. It’s also beneficial to have mulch on the soil to keep the soil cool so it will not need as much water. 2 Hearts

A trellis will work well for vining flowers and vegetables. Mixing a flowering vine with a vegetable will add color and interest to your porch garden.

It’s amazing what you can grow in a small space garden area. With proper planning you can grow enough produce on your porch to save $500 to $1000 on your grocery bill.

And by adding herbs and flowers you will also be able to grow you own spices for the kitchen and flower bouquets for the house and garden oasis area.

With the increased interest in gardening, gardening space has become an issue. You may have a large backyard but other areas also need space or you may have a balcony and only a few feet of gardening space available. But with small backyard designs and creativity you can make the best use out the space you have. abundance

Another issue with gardening and backyard maintenance is time. Everyone wants a lush backyard with shrubs, trees, fruit and vegetables and room for family activities but backyard gardening can take time so setting up a small garden or Postage stamp garden as they are often referred to makes sense.

A postage stamp garden is considered a small area that can produce abundant herbs, flowers and vegetables. It can also be an ornamental garden of annuals, perennials and shrubs planted in the ground or in containers making full use of a very small space. How is a postage stamp garden possible? With careful planning, using intensive gardening practices and careful selection of the plants you grow.

In the last few years’ small growing shrubs and fruit trees have been developed. Fruit tree can also be espaliers and grown on a wall. Grapes and other fruit can be trained for arbors and trellises.

Many vegetables are available in a mini size that will be perfect for the small garden and saving space. And even with larger plants if you grow them vertically you will save an amazing amount of space and I find it helps with insect control too. There are fewer places for the insects to hide. My one word of advice with vertical growing is to make sure your trellised, posts or way you fix for the produce to grow on a wall is firm. Theses plants can get heavy when laden with produce so take extra care to ensure they are sturdy.

There are flowers that also stay compact and if you chose carefully many flowers are edible and serve two purposes, beauty and use. And don’t forget potted shrubs, which can be placed outdoors in the summer months and if the right shrub is chosen brought indoors in the colder months for more enjoyment. Shrubs left outdoors may need to be winterized depending on your climate.

Container gardening and vertical growing are two perfect solutions for the balcony gardener or apartment renter with very limited space. Between hanging baskets and containers you should be able to grow flower and produce and create a nice secret garden oasis. And by trying to combine the style of the indoor space with outdoor space you can create a large feel of space in both areas.

If you feel you don’t have a lot of space for a garden look into postage stamp gardening and intensive gardening for ideas on how to grow in a smaller space and how to save time working in your garden area.

Flowers and even vegetables add a beauty and oasis feeling to any backyard or indoor living area. They are particularly stunning in small space areas like patios and balconies. Possibly you have a small yard or no yard but there is still hope for a lush hanging garden filled with a variety of flowers, herbs and vegetables.

All you need is a deck, or wall or a window–or any combination of those three! And even hanging basket suspended from the ceiling has a great look. Just watch for the weight of hanging baskets when using a ceiling.

When planning for a small space garden area, each plant takes on new meaning. Select only what you want and your indoor lighting will accommodate. You may also consider miniature versions of certain plants like miniature roses, mini pumpkins, or cacti.

Where is the best location for your garden? Window boxes work well if you plan on using sills. You can find flower boxes with grooves to fit on top of deck railings. This will help to ensure the boxes stay in place. With the wide selection of window boxes available you can match and compliment any interior design. And if you’re creative you can make your own window boxes and indoor planters.

I have even seen an entire wall that was turned into a hanging wall garden and it was stunning. This was accomplished with hanging boxes and hanging baskets. And in the corner was a small water fountain.

Decide what will you plant in your small space hanging garden. Annuals? Perennials? Vegetables? Or will you go for color and fragrance? It’s possible to have a few plants of each and mix them in the baskets and boxes.

Annuals, such as begonias, firetail and wave petunias have brilliant flowers that cascade in weeping branches. Alyssum (or “sweet alyssum”) has a wonderful evening fragrance. Perennials include the lilac-colored Molinae and thick, bushy, Trailing Antique Rose. And don’t forget nasturtiums and lavender. Vines will also add color and line to your garden area.

Small vegetable like mini hot peppers, cherry tomatoes, lettuce, and mini squash or pumpkins will easily grow in boxes and hanging baskets. They look colorful mixed with herbs and flowers. stairs2

Find out which flowers and vegetables will work with your climate if you plan on having your garden outdoors. And many of these plants can be brought indoors or over wintered if you can enclose your patio or balcony area. Your local gardening center should be able to help you with your climate growing information.

One other consideration you may have to make is additional lighting. Plants need six to eight hours of light a day. If you windows are not supplying adequate light you may want to add spotlight or floor lamps.

With planning and a little creativity you can create your own small space mini garden oasis to relax in after a day of work. You will be amazed how the addition of a garden area will give your living space a larger feeling.

Rooftop gardens have a magic of their own, particularly at night. And with a little planning they are extremely successful. They also add to you living space. Many apartment dwellers have access to a portion of the roof but check with your landlord before you start your small space garden project Garden Terrace #2

You will need to study the rooftop at different times of the day. This will let you know how much sunlight and shade your garden area will receive. This will help you determine what plants you will be able to grow.

Next you will need to buy an assortment of containers. I like to find unique containers to use when container gardening just to add fun and flair to the garden area. You can also usually pick up different containers at garage sales for pennies.

But if you want to garden with a theme choose Terra cotta pots and other containers glazed in colors of the Mediterranean for a Tuscan look. Wood will give you a country look and feel.  And black and white, the contemporary look. This year’s garden trend is yellow and bright colors so you may want to try that.

Arrange your containers on the roof in an interesting pattern and at varying heights. You are creating a garden but you are also creating a place to relax and enjoy. And an artistic arrangement will add atmosphere to the space.

Get some advice from garden centers about what flowers and vegetables will grow in your climate. Select the best soil mix you can and them choose your seeds or transplants.

Now comes the fun part! It’s time to plant, fertilize and water. One challenge you may have on a rooftop garden is watering. I suggest a rain barrel and plastic jugs for storing water on the roof. I would also mulch the top of your containers with grass clippings or straw to help keep the soil cooler and moist.

If you share the roof with other renters they may also want to garden and share the space. You could share the work and produce just like in community gardens.

Add some furniture to relax and a table and chairs for entertaining. Your rooftop garden will provide you with a great place to escape to and fresh flowers and vegetables. You may also want to add night-lights to create atmosphere and extend you time on the rooftop.
