Backyard projects can be large or small and can be done by yourself or you may need to hire help to get the project done right. By looking at your yard and planning your project on paper you will be able to decide if your project is manageable or if help is required. Sinking 4' Rebar

Here are a few suggestions for whichever direction you decide to take for your backyard projects.

When to hire help for you backyard project.

  • When electrical lines or other service lines are involved.
  • If you need a large amount of dirt moved or the ground redesigned or graded
  • For drainage problems
  • When the project is large and involves several different projects
  • Anytime you feel uncomfortable. Remember the backyard is for enjoyment – not irritation.

Questions and concerns when hiring a company.

  • Check references. And ask for more than three.
  • Check to see if there have been any complaints against the company.
  • Hire locally if possible. They are easier to communicate with if there are problems and more willing to correct any problems.
  • Check with several companies for the best price and job references.
  • Plan your project before hand so you can communicate with the company and workers.
  • Have everything in writing.

Do It Yourself (DIY) Backyard Projects

Many projects can be done by yourself, family or with the help of friends. And backyard projects can be a fun learning project for everyone involved. Backyard projects can be as easy as setting up a raised bed garden or be as challenging as installing a patio floor or deck.

Smaller projects like designing a butterfly garden or painting birdhouses and setting them out can include the smallest family member. This project will only take a few hours. Other projects may take a few weeks and need more planning.

Planning a DIY backyard Project

  • How much time and money will be involved
  • Will you be able to use supplies you have or will you be purchasing items?
  • Have a plan! With out a plan or design you will have problems and your project will take more time. Plans can be found online or in gardening magazines.
  • If possible make it a family project. You will have lasting memories of the day

Our backyard has so much that needs to be done but we are planning to do one thing at a time. Like you said the backyard is for our enjoyment so I don’t plan on getting too stressed.

My health isn’t the best and my strength is fleeting so I can’t do much. If I need something done I will have to hire someone.

We have a real problem here in the last few years with scammers so we have to be extra careful. We have been living here long enough to know the companies to hire and would never hire someone that comes knocking at our door without a lot of checking first.

Of course unless they are here to shovel all this snow. :)

    Hi James,

Yes, oftentimes its bst to hire out the work. If your left with bad memories of a tough job its not as easy to enjoy your yard.

I also have nmany jobs to do this summer. I plan to hire out the larger ones and do the small ones that show instant improvement and fun.

;) If you find someone to shovel the snow…send him my way! There’s a light snow falling as I type.

AND when you do it yourself you get the bragging rights when your friends and family come over.

Or like you said getting them involved can be fun too. you can also share it with the rest of the world without having them over on a site like http://YardShare.com. great place for inspiration from other peoples hard work too.

It’s not always easy to ask friends to help but if you know they’ve got a project they’d like done it’s a good way to barter.
