The Backyard garden adds one more dimension to your yard and it’s surprising how the addition of plants seem to enlarge your backyard and adds to the relaxing feeling you are trying to create. Your backyard garden area should be an extension of what you like both in design, color and use.

My backyard always has a mix of flowers, vegetables and herbs. They grow in raised beds, theme gardens and hanging baskets. I guess you would call it a backyard jungle. But it’s relaxing and fun. And that is what gardening should be, fun!

Flowers tend to be the easiest gardens followed by vegetables and the last garden variety that tends to be more work are fruit gardens. Fruit gardens need more maintenance to keep insects away. Insects are attracted to the sweet in the fruit and don’t like to take no for an answer

In order to make sure you have a healthy fruit crop you will have to decide if you use a chemical for insect control or use natural insect control. I always use natural pest control that I mix up using home ingredients. I also hand pick insects if necessary. I may loose a few fruits this way but its worth it knowing I have healthy produce and have not hurt the environment.

My backyard fruit garden consist of blueberries, blackberries, raspberries and strawberries. I also grow melons in the garden area. These smaller fruits produce well and are relatively insect free. This is because I make sure I have the best-fertilized soil I can mix up and use a heavy ground cover to keep moisture in the soil. I also grow a few fruit crops in hanging baskets.

My larger fruits do include fruit trees, which is a whole other category when it comes to care

When considering fruit trees I would carefully check your growing zone conditions and take into consideration how much space a fruit tree will take. You will also need to check and see if the fruit trees you select need another tree to help pollinate the fruit crop.

Dwarf trees or espalier trees may be a consideration. They take less space and espalier fruit trees are very pretty and often are used to help create privacy in smaller backyards.

Fruit trees need to have sun and be located in an area where the wind can move through the trees. Growing too close to a larger tree or a building that blocks sun and air current will cut back on your fruit crop. One last consideration is do you have the time to prune your trees? Fruit trees need pruning to keep the tree healthy and let the sun get to the fruit.

Growing fruit in your backyard garden oasis will add more work but there is nothing quite as nice in the morning than a fresh peach that is warmed by the sun or homemade strawberry shortcake. As with all gardening and additions to your backyard oasis you need to consider time and the additional value it adds to your property and your needs.

A Backyard Garden adds color, variety, and fresh vegetables or fruits to your diet. It also provides fresh air, exercise and can offer time together with family. Depending on how you design your backyard garden and its purpose will be the deciding factor on if it’s functional or decorative. What ever your needs, the garden will add to the beauty and relaxing factors of your backyard oasis

There are many different types of gardens and it helps to narrow down the purpose that your garden will serve. A garden can tend to grow and get to big, which add to the work and takes away from the fun. You may also not have enough time to work in the garden area so its best to think small and keep the fun in gardening. Plants that are properly tended will be healthier.

Will you choose a flower garden, vegetable garden or combine the two? Is your garden space limited and container or balcony gardening would suit your lifestyle better? Are herbs your passion? I myself combine all of these and like to redo the patio and deck areas about twice a summer. It just makes my backyard oasis an exciting retreat for all my friends and family.

One tip I will pass onto you is I find it a timesaving step to group my plants that need the same care in the same area. I also group any plants that need additional watering as close to my water source as possible.

Here are a few more tips that have saved me time in the past. Perennial flowers take less time and last from year to year. Properly planned, you can have a perennial garden with color from spring until fall. And just to make sure, I add annual flowers to the flower garden border and where any of the perennial plants are a little thin. Herbs will work just as well, and I have to admit I really like adding vegetables like colored Swiss chard or scarlet runner beans in flower gardens.

Vegetable gardens require a little more work and planning. They also take more knowledge in how to plant and harvest numerous kinds of produce. Vegetables also add color and texture and are a very pretty addition to any yard. With proper choices there will be fresh vegetables all season long. And again I add flowers to my vegetables gardens. It adds color and fun and several flowers repel insects and small animals.

If you set up a vegetable garden in a raised bed you can grow many varieties of vegetables in a small area. Growing vertically and square foot gardening principles offer advice on how to get the most use out of limited space. I grow many of my vegetable varieties in hanging baskets or containers. This gives me fresh vegetables that are either going on my porch or just a few steps away from the door.

Another way of growing both vegetables and flowers would be in mini theme gardens or on windowsills. What is all comes down to is keeping your backyard garden fun and it will add to that festive backyard oasis feeling you have created for your home.

Have your children reached an age where you need to update their children’s play area and take out the play equipment and possibly add a pool, deck or pond area for teenage parties? Has your dog or cat decided to rearrange your plants and shrubs? You may also have lost a few plants or trees to age or illness.

Whether your backyard is in its beginning planning stages or has reached the backyard oasis paradise that you planned there are always small projects and changes that you may need or want to make.

Backyard Ideas

  • When working with your backyard its always a wise to draw up an idea and project list to keep your plans and backyard design ideas moving forward smoothly and to get the best value for your dollar.
  • Is there a part of your yard that doesn’t seem to meet the needs that it was originally created for? Would a few simple changes make it usable or do you need to re-design the area?
  • You may have decided that yard work takes more time than you anticipated and that adding a larger patio or a garden area with mulch and ground covers for easier maintenance would add to your backyard enjoyment and relaxation.

Backyard Projects

  • Is it time to enlarge the garage, add the workshop or put up that sunroom or greenhouse you have always wanted? These projects usually are best to plan for the spring or fall when your entertaining and backyard use has calmed down and if the yard becomes cluttered with wood and ladders it won’t interfere with a party or yard work.
  • Backyard projects usually take the most time and money so take extra time with their planning. You may also need to get a zoning permit or take in to consideration the effect of your project on the trees and shrubs in your backyard area.

Backyard tips

  • If your yard could use a fresh look or design it’s best to start slowly. Look at a few gardening or landscaping books or magazines. Its amazing the new look you can get with just a few new shrubs or a small fence or trellis. You can even re-invent the patio with container gardening and a small water fountain.
  • Plan for the future and make your new backyard design work for years to come with only a few changes needed. A perfect example for this would be if your children were at an age where they will be outgrowing toys and need less of a play area. Think of creating an entertainment area where those changes can be made easily.
  • Plan for multiple uses for different parts of the backyard. Patios, garden rooms, garden areas and terraced area create separate area of a yard.and make the yard seem larger. A child’s play area can be used for adding tables for parties.
  • Keep your backyard plans simple. The main purpose of a backyard is to create an outdoor living area where family and friend can enjoy quiet times or family events. Your backyard is your oasis away from the world. Keep this in mind when planning your yard.

A Backyard pond is a wonderful relaxing addition to any backyard but sometimes space, time to create a pond or cost can be an issue. By creating a barrel pond you can enjoy all the benefits of a pond in a smaller space and have it set up quickly.

You can pick up a barrel at a garden center or by going bargain hunting at garage sales or auctions. I picked up a barrel near a dumpster for free. You can also use bucket or old washing pans. Basically if it will hold water you can adapt it, but a barrel has rustic character that usually fits any garden plan.

Your first step after acquiring your barrel is to cut it in half so you can easily work with it and so that it has a proper pond depth.  You also need to select its permanent location. Once its filled it will be extremely heavy and you will not want to move it. Place sand under the barrel and even the location where it will set. Check to make sure the barrel is level.

Next fill the barrel pond and let it set. This will check for any leaks you may have. If the water level drops or the ground is damp outside the barrel you will need to fix your leak. This is quite easy; just let the barrel dry well. Once dry, seal it with an asphalt-bases sealant. These are available at any garden center and most hardware stores.

Fill your barrel pond and let the water set for a week. This gives the water time to warm up and if the water has added chlorine, time for the chlorine to dissipate. Now is the creative part of the projects: adding water plants. You will need an assortment of both floating plants and submerged plants. Both plant varieties are required to create and maintain a healthy water environment.

Submerged water plants grow at the bottom of a pond and naturally add oxygen to the barrel pond. This will keep algae in check. Floating aquatic water plants have roots that grow in soil Their leaves float on top of the water, which provides shade and helps inhibit the growth of algae. Water lilies thrive in a barrel pond and add beauty to any pond.

When you are ready to add your plants you will need to pot the water plants in water-plant baskets. Or you can use black plastic pots with slits cut into the sides. Fill the pots with a potting mix making sure that you do not bury any part of the water plants crown. If the crown is at all covered, it will cause the plant to rot and die. Finally cover the surface of the potting mix with coarse gravel.

Note: Water plants tend to be heavy feeders, so I add about one-third composted cow manure to ensure that they will stay healthy.

Submerge the pots in slowly into the water. Make sure that any air bubbles escape gradually. This will prevent the soil from being disturbed. You may need to set some of the plants on rocks or bricks if the plants are low and their leaves do not float on the waters surface.

As with any pond you need to allow time for the plants to adjust to their new surrounding and the ponds environment to stabilize before you add fish. This may take several weeks in a barrel pond.

A barrel pond will take some care and maintenance. But if the barrel pond is kept clean and the plants are healthy your pond should thrive and add hours of entertainment, relaxation and beauty to your backyard oasis.  Include this project in your next backyard design creation.

As a homeowner or renter you can transform your backyard into a relaxing outdoor retreat: your own personal backyard oasis. Imagine having an escape from work and every day stress just a few steps away. A place you look forward to spending time after work or a hectic day.

There are many ways to create a backyard oasis but one quick and relatively easy step is to add a backyard pond. Backyard ponds can expand the look your yard, give it a new feel and add to entertaining or leisure activities. Children also enjoy a pond, particularly if you add backyard goldfish or Koi and a nearby children’s play area.

The first decision in adding a pond will be its size and shape. Take into consideration your personal taste or family needs. And yes, this may include planning for pets and small children. You will also want to plan for aquatic plants and backyard fish, which add to the beauty and give it that garden oasis feeling. Plants and fish also help with your backyard pond maintenance. By planning for a delicate balance between nature and technology, you can naturally control algae and insects.

Certain types of backyard fish can minimize problems with algae. A perfect example would be goldfish. There are well over 100 varieties of goldfish to choose from with wonderful colors and markings. Their antics in a pond add a relaxing past time for friends and family. Japanese Koi are also popular in garden ponds. Koi fish require more room in a pond than other fish so you will have to plan for a larger pond if you select them.

Before you add fish into your pond you need to make sure all water garden plants are properly established and have adapted to their new garden oasis. The water in your pond must also be clean, free of chemicals and have the proper air levels for fish to thrive. A small water fountain will ensure your water is properly aerated for both fish and plants.

Aquatic plants add beauty and help maintain healthy fish and ponds. Although there are many varieties of plants to choose from they all fall into two important categories. Water plants such as floaters, marsh plants and marginals add color and give fish places to hide and relax. Oxygenators absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen as they grow and are essential to keeping the water properly balanced for fish and plant life.

As with any garden accessories or features you add to your backyard they do add work and have certain problems you watch for. Backyard ponds are no exception. Care must be taken if you have small children. Neighborhood cats may decide to dine on your fish. Pets will use the area for drinking. And nature animals like toads and frogs may decide to enjoy your water pond too.

But if you plan carefully any problems that arise can be easy managed and the enjoyment that your backyard pond will add to your garden oasis will make up for a little additional maintenance.
